In The New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, Eckhart Tolle argues that transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is essential to personal happiness. Our attachment to the ego creates dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness. For Tolle, presence (or present moment consciousness) is the only antidote to the ego and unhappiness. This course explores his thoughts and our personal experiences with the ego, what he calls the pain-body, presence, and the role of mindfulness practices.

This class is designed to deepen students’ mindfulness practice and will include mindfulness exercises, short talks, and class discussion. Students are expected to meditate daily during the course.

Required book (must be purchased separately):
A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle

“Deepening Your Mindfulness Practice in the Pressure-Cooker of Daily Life”

Tuesday evenings, November 11- December 2, 2008, 6:30 – 8:30pm

How do we integrate the practice of mindfulness into busy work and home life? As it is only in the present moment that healing and change can occur, this class will help you develop strategies for practicing in the midst of charged moments and tight time schedules. Short practices that are easy to incorporate into daily life will be offered. We will also deepen our awareness of how our emotions operate so as to short-circuit the experience of being “run” by them. Anger, self-judgment, anxiety, jealousy, and regret are all candidates for the light of awareness. This class will strengthen your regular daily practice and support you in staying present in the face of difficulty. Each class will include mindfulness practices, short talks, and class discussion. Hand-outs will be included.
